![]() When setting bricks as soldiers, a bricklayer should use a small boat level to check the verticality of individual bricks as they are laid (2, 7 and 8).Ĭare must also be taken with the alignment of the vertical surface of individual units so as to generate an overall flat plane of walling - 'hatching and grinning' describes the surface irregularity caused by the misalignment of face planes which is more noticeable when it occurs in stack bonding. Even when the bricks have been supplied as more consistent in size and form than is usual, constant checking of joint alignment will be required using string lines and a plumb level. ![]() The more rigorous geometry of stack bonds demands extra care and attention by the bricklayers, particularly if soldier courses are specified. No special considerations apply to stack bonded work, except that the joints should be accentuated rather than disguised by using flush joints of mortar that matches the colour of the bricks. The colour, texture and profile of the mortar joint, as with all brickwork, strongly influences the overall appearance of the surface and should be chosen with due care. These requirements for bricks of more carefully controlled variations of size and form may well attract a slightly higher cost. This aspect should also be discussed with the manufacturer, particularly when it is proposed to use bricks of long, thin proportions (7 and 8). The straightness of a brick is also a consideration in regularity and bricks which are liable to be bowed may not give a very satisfactory appearance when stack bonded as soldiers. There is no agreed industry standard for the maximum variation tolerable for such an application, but experience suggests that the difference in length between the longest and shortest bricks supplied should be no more than 3mm. ![]() For clay bricks the limits of size permitted in BS 3921: 'Specification for clay bricks' will not provide an adequate method of regulating supplies and an alternative specification should be agreed with the manufacturer. Therefore, check on the practicalities of obtaining supplies of appropriate consistency when considering a particular brick. This requirement imposes greater stricture on consistency of the size and shape of the bricks used than does normally bonded work. Bricks with a distinctive texture intended to be laid conventionally (flat), may not have a satisfactory appearance if laid on-end.įor good appearance of stack bonded brickwork the continuous horizontal and vertical mortar joints in the face of the work need to be straight and consistent in width. As the bond depends on regularised mortar joints for it to read well, plain coloured bricks are preferable to multi-coloured types, which can camouflage the bond pattern. The colour and texture of the proposed brick should be considered in relation to the form of stack bonding proposed. Other than requirements for protection against corrosion, no specification for the reinforcement itself or the frequency of its provision in the bed joints of stack bonded brickwork is included in the current British Standard Code of Practice for the Use of Masonry (BS 5628: Part 3), but BDA is aware that some specialist manufacturers of bed-joint reinforcement provide design advice for architects and structural engineers (Bekaert Building Products Ltd, 0114 2244488.

Squat (Bilateral variations) However, this is really a misnomer as it is not really either knee or hip dominant -it’s both. The following are examples of hip dominant exercises: ![]() Similarly, the High-Box Step-Up is also a hip dominant movement that is not reflective of a hip hinge. For example, whilst the Glute Bridge is a hip dominant movement, it is not reflective of a hip hinging movement. Though this category can include hip hinging movements, it is used to identify all exercises in which the hip joint plays the primary role. Romanian Deadlift (RDL) and its variations (e.g.The following are examples of hip hinge exercises: These exercises tend to be more of a pulling action as opposed to a push. glutes, hamstrings) and spinal erectors to extend the hip. These hip dominant exercises are initiated by a contraction of the hip extensors (e.g. This category of exercises is comprised of exercises that involve a hinging motion at the hip joint, with little to no knee movement. Note that this is purely a fictitious example. In which case, this may be deemed as a knee-dominant movement because the knee is experiencing the largest ‘relative’ forces). During a pistol squat, whilst the forces exerted on the hip may be larger than those on the knee, the knee might be enduring its maximal tolerance. let’s just suggest that the hip is capable of handling higher joint forces than the knee. ![]()

While Jang Hye-sung regularly refers to Su-ha as her dongsaeng (a non-gender-specific term for a younger sibling), Su-ha resists calling her Noona, trying to put himself on the same level with her throughout the show. It’s an artefact of the normalisation of older man/younger woman relationships. older brother) but a younger man often avoids referring to a romantic interest as ‘Noona’. Nonetheless, he uses his telepathy to help her with her cases as he starts to suspect that the recently-released Min Joon-kook has returned for his revenge. She gets a job as a public defender for the steady pay cheque and finds herself working with idealistic and enthusiastic lawyer, Cha Kwan-woo (a dorky and amenable Yoon Sang-hyun), whom she starts dating. She no longer believes in justice and merely works to earn money. Jang Hye-sung in contrast has dived headfirst into cynicism, going through a routine as a lawyer with little enthusiasm. And that ultimately is what I Hear Your Voice explores: how does justice get served for those who can’t be heard, either physically or socially? The answer of course is that those who have a voice need to speak for them.įast forward 12 years, Park Su-ha is in his final year of highschool and has built up a fantasy version of his “first love”: the girl who risked her life to get justice for his father and whom he has sworn to protect from Min Joon-kook. But, as he discovers in his father’s trial, the truth is worthless if you’re voiceless. While his head injury has rendered him mute, Park Su-ha finds it has also given him a gift – telepathy. She nonetheless comes quickly to regret testifying when the perpetrator, Min Joon-kook (Jung Woong-in) threatens vengeance on herself and her family. Jang Hye-sung’s decision was influenced by her own recent encounter with injustice and her strained relationship with former friend turned nemesis, Seo Do-yeon. Justice is served by 19-year-old witness, Jang Hye-sung, who risks her life to testify. Rendered mute by the head injury he received at the time, he is unable to communicate properly and faces the prospect of his father’s murderer walking free. When he was a child, Park Su-ha witnessed his father’s murder in a staged car crash. Show just works, despite everything about it that shouldn’t work: the cliched childhood connection through shared trauma, the large age gap, the overuse of kdrama tropes and the somewhat preachy writing about justice.ĭespite (or maybe even because of) all this, I Hear Your Voice really is the classic kdrama I remember it being and I’m happy to recommend it as a gateway drama to people exploring Korean content for the first time. Having rewatched I Hear Your Voice for the first time in a long time, I’m happy to report that the show holds up far more than I expected. In the case of I Hear Your Voice though, the romance is an issue only for the lead themselves and this is only one of the drama’s refreshing decisions. A true Noona romance is one where the age difference is an issue – either for the characters or for the people around them – in a way that it wouldn’t be if the leads’ genders were reversed. The popularity of Noona romances therefore comes from their inherent trangressiveness. Romances between a young woman and an older man are normalised so reversing this dynamic comes with a challenge to cultural mores and social standards. older sister) – are a product of Korea’s deeply hierarchical, age-based and hyper-patriarchal culture.
